December 2003 - On Duty Christmas Dinner

The annual Christmas dinner for on-duty Police Association members was held at the Garden’s Restaurant in the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. The dinner provided an all too rare opportunity to see old friends and renew old acquaintances. A well deserved thanks to the organizers of the event, as well as the employees of the restaurant for their excellent service on Christmas day.

December 2003 - Cops for Kids

At the 1st annual “Cops for Kids” celebrations, Christmas parties were held at Worth Heights Elementary and the Como Community Center. Over 100 children were in attendance and all of them had a chance to meet Santa Claus! These celebrations were the result of lots of hard work by volunteers from all facets of our department. A special thanks go out to our Santas, Communications Division Personnel, and to every officer who took the time to come out and make the evening the great success that it was. And a very special thanks to Harry Hussberg who took the photos at Worth Heights Elementary School.

Numerous children took turns meeting with Santa and picking up their gift bags. In some cases, the bags were as big as the children they were given to. Everyone went away with a big smile and memories that will last forever. A special thanks to all the officers (elves) that came out, Sam Livingston for his organization of the event, and to Councilman John Stevenson and his wife for participating in the 1st annual “Cops for Kids Christmas”.

The inaugural event for the Fort Worth Cops for Kids program was a huge success on November 24, 2003. The children of over 50 families in need were paired up with waiting police officers and dispatchers at the Minyards on E. Berry where they shopped together for a Thanksgiving meal.

Mayor Mike Moncrief and City Council Member Frank Moss were on hand to help with the program. Both participated with the police officers bringing smiles to kids and other family members who were in attendance. Both praised the FWPOA for the program and the professionalism of the project.

"This first event went perfect," said Sam Livingston, Cops for Kids program coordinator. "Billy Gray did a wonderful job bringing everyone together and organizing the Thanksgiving Feast. It couldn’t have been done better. I would also like to thank all the police department people who showed up to participate. They really did a great job."

Event coordinator, Billy Gray, added "I would also like to thank Waste Management, the Fort Worth Aerospace Optimists Club and Wayne Frazier for their participation. They added something special to what we did."

Several officers and dispatchers from communications talked about what a good time they had participating and most asked when the next event was to take place so they could join in on the fun.

Cops for Kids will be organizing several Christmas parties for children in need near Christmas Day. Volunteers will be needed to attend the parties and also shop for gifts for the children prior to the event. Information will be forwarded to the membership via e-mail in the near future.
