The Fort Worth Peace Officer and Firefighter’s Memorial is beginning to move from an idea to a reality.  Design work on our planned memorial has progressed to the point that we have now started fund raising to build the memorial.

John Kerr started the effort to build the memorial.  John has now been replaced on the committee by FWPOA President Lee Jackson..   Jim Tate is leading the effort for the firefighters association.  There are several other members of both the fire and police departments on the committee, as well as several prominent Fort Worth citizens.  Kevin Foster is conducting the research on the proposed enrollees for the memorial.  A great deal of care is being taken to insure accuracy of our information.

Here are some basic facts about our memorial to get everyone up to speed:

The memorial will be located in Trinity Park on W. 7th Street, between the roadway and the park shelter.  The centerpiece of the memorial will be a large sculpture of a firefighter and peace officer.  Both statues will be holding the reins of a riderless horse.   The sculpture will be of “heroic” proportions of 150% of life size.  The sculpture will sit on a round base of either limestone or granite.  Behind the sculpture will be a memorial wall.  Three sections will be erected with initial construction.  Other sections can be added later when needed by future generations.  There will be a winding path of crushed granite leading to the memorial.  This path will cross other paths, each of which will represent eras of our city’s history.

Research work is continuing, but it appears that the first group of inductees will total 83 police officers, firefighters, and deputy city marshals.

There is no estimated completion date yet for the memorial, but we are hoping for completion in 2005.  While actual construction will take less than a year, it could take longer depending on our ability to raise donations from corporate sponsors and citizens.  There is also a possibility that numbered miniatures of the memorial will be sold to help raise funds for the completion of the memorial.  We have no estimate (yet) of the cost of these miniatures, or if it will be a viable option for fund raising.  We are selling personalized bricks along the pathway for $100 donations.

The Memorial Committee has adopted inclusion criteria as written and submitted by Kevin Foster.  The criteria was assembled from the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial, the Texas Peace Officer’s Memorial, and the Texas Sheriff’s Association’s Lost Lawman Memorial.  Some portions of the criteria had to be written specifically for our memorial, since there are no other individual memorials covering marshals, police officers, and firefighters.  This will help eliminate subjective viewpoints and opinions, and prevent any decisions from being made for political reasons.  The goal of the committee is to include all those who deserve to be included, and to do the right thing whenever possible.

The committee members are:

Charlie Geren    Chairman

Lee Jackson    President of FWPOA

Jim Tate   FWFFA

Billy Samuel   VP – FWPOA

Pat Vasquez       VP – FWFFA

Rosie Moncrief     FWPOA Appointee

Brenda Silcox    FWFFA Appointee

Kevin Foster    Memorial Research Director

It should be noted that if there is any doubt concerning the status of the officer at the time of the incident, or due to historical reasons the facts of the incident are blurred, the matter shall be decided in favor of inclusion.
